This stupendous set of live-recorded DVDs makes the following remark of Norman Lebrechts look rather silly: Daniel Barenboim ... must decide soon which of his talents is the one he wants the world to remember him by (La Scena Musicale Online, Nov. 2002). The films demonstrate that at the same time as being one of the worlds busiest and most accomplished conductors, Barenboim can still play the entire Beethoven sonata cycle from memory in less than three weeks - and can play it at least as well as any full-time pianist alive (and possibly better than any pianist that ever lived, except Beethoven himself). I was lucky enough to be in the Berlin audience for three of these eight recitals, and can vouch that the film-makers have captured the electricity and the magic of those occasions with great skill. Barenboim is performing the Beethoven cycle again at Londons Festival Hall in Jan/Feb 2008. Go if you can ... buy this set if you cant ... better still, do both.
丹尼爾巴倫波伊姆(Daniel Barenboim，或譯巴倫波因，1942年11月15日)，是阿根廷-以色列的鋼琴家、指揮家。
1942年生於布宜諾斯艾利斯，為第三代俄裔猶太移民。布宜諾斯艾利斯當時有世界第三的猶太人口。歲，他隨父母移居建國不久的以色列之港市特拉維夫。 巴倫博伊姆熟練掌握七門語言（希伯來、德、英、法、意、俄、西班牙），持阿根廷和以色列兩國護照。
音樂生涯
5歲從父習琴，1949年他時7歲作為鋼琴家首次登臺。1954年夏，柏林愛樂指揮富特文格勒（Wilhelm Furtw?ngler)邀請其與柏林愛樂合作，出於對戰爭陰影的顧慮，這一邀請為其父所拒絕。
1975年接替喬治索爾蒂成為巴黎管弦樂團首席指揮。從1991年起成為芝加哥交響樂團首席指揮，從1992年開始成為柏林德意志國家歌劇院的藝術指導和總監。
從1981年到1999年巴倫波伊姆在拜魯伊特音樂節上指揮，曲目有特利斯坦與伊索爾德，帕西法爾和尼伯龍根的指環。
與薩義德的友誼
1990年代初，猶太音樂家巴倫博伊姆與巴勒斯坦學者薩義德邂逅於倫敦一家酒店的大堂。對音樂的共同熱愛和對文化的諸多相似看法使他們結為摯友。1999年，取意於歌德的《西東集》（West-?stlicher Divan)，兩位立意在魏瑪舉行西東集工作坊，以紀念歌德誕辰250周年。在巴倫博伊姆與馬友友的指導下，魏瑪工作坊使以色列與阿拉伯青年音樂家有機會跨越種族藩籬，相互切磋，共同演奏。而薩義德則在工作坊期間主持晚間的音樂、文化與政治討論。之後，這一工作坊在德國與美國芝加哥亦多次舉行。薩義德曾為巴倫博伊姆的演出與錄音寫作，他們近十年來的對話則於2002年結集成書Parallels and Paradoxes: Explorations in Music and Society（平行與矛盾-在音樂與社會中的探索）。
巴倫波伊姆因對巴勒斯坦-以色列和平進程的貢獻於2002年獲阿斯圖裡王子獎。
個人生活
1967年，與英國大提琴家傑奎琳杜普蕾成婚。兩人曾頻繁地聯袂演出。1987年，杜普蕾辭世。 現任妻子為艾琳娜巴倫博伊姆(Elena Barenboim)
